Retail industry in Poland resistant to the crisis
2009-11-09
It transpires that Poland is the only country in the EU to have avoided the effects of the economic downturn, according to
Puls Biznesu. Only-one third of customers in Poland decided to cut spending on goods in 2009 in comparison with previous years, according to research carried out by Ipsos for eBay. More than 50% of respondents claimed that they had spent more-or-less the same amount of money in 2009, and approximately 35% will probably have spent even more.
By way of comparison, in Ireland 75% customers have cut spending, whereas in Great Britain, Spain, France and Italy the figure is about 50%. This illustrates the condition of the foreign economies, which are shrinking by 5-8% per annum. Meanwhile, Poland’s gross domestic product is expected to show a 1% increase at the end of 2009.
However, the 20% growth in spending predicted in 2008 seems unattainable, as
Poles are economising by shopping at discount chain stores, which offer goods at lower prices. This is typical of 57% of
customers. Furthermore, the unemployment rate is expected to increase by the end of H1 2010, which will also have an adverse impact on spending.
