Cold weather and snow causing problems for restaurants
2010-02-03
Cold weather and heavy snowfalls could lead to lower turnover for restaurateurs during the first quarter of 2010. The number of customers of restaurants in Poland fell significantly in 2009 and at the beginning of 2010 due to the economic downturn and low temperatures in the past three months which made people stay at their homes. However, main market players expects an increase in demand in the second half of 2010 or in 2011.
According to PMR's report
HoReCa market in Poland 2009, the Polish restaurant market was worth PLN 20bn (€4.9bn) in 2009. At present, the largest market players are
McDonald's, with around 227 establishments,
AmRest, with some 185 restaurants and
Sfinks Polska with 111. The latter company is currently working on the acquisition of the
Da Grasso pizza chain which owns 180 establishments. Sfinks recently signed an addendum to its preliminary agreement on the acquisition of the chain, to ensure that the decision on the takeover is made no later than 31 July 2010. The restaurateur had previously expected to decide on the acquisition by the end of January 2010. If Sfinks acquires Da Grasso, it will become the largest restaurant group in Poland, in terms of the number of establishments.
