Largest restaurant chains to open 200 establishments in Poland in 2011

2010-08-11

In 2011, the largest restaurant chains are expected to open around 200 new establishments in Poland. AmRest, the operator of KFC, Pizza Hut and Burger King, is planning to set up around 50 new restaurants in 2010, whereas 2011 is expected to bring around 100 more. The average cost of opening one new establishment is PLN 2.3m (€500,000). The group recently raised money for development from a share issue directed to the American investment fund Warburg. At present, AmRest manages 440 restaurants, of which 193 are located in Poland.
In addition, Sfinks Polska, the operator of the Sphinx, Chlopskie Jadlo and Wook chains, plans to increase the number of its establishments from the 110 currently operating to 150 in 2011.
The Da Grasso pizza chain intends to maintain its pace of development over the next few years. So far, the company has been opening 36 new establishments per year on average. At present, the chain consists of 203 pizzerias.
The largest chain in Poland, McDonald’s, which has 243 restaurants. The company opened 17 new bars in 2009, and 2010 is expected to bring the same number. McDonald’s has currently 243 restaurants in Poland.
According to PMR data, despite the growing number of restaurants, the value of the Polish dining-out market has been falling since 2009, when there was a 4% reduction to PLN 18.5bn (€4.6bn). In 2010, the restaurant market is expected to be worth as much as it was in 2007, when the figure was PLN 18.2bn (€4.5bn). This is the equivalent of a 1.5% reduction in comparison with 2009.
