Consumer confidence index in July
2010-08-11
Consumer confidence index: 96.74 pts., +2.44 pts.
Propensity-to-buy index: 100.73 pts., +0.86 pts.
Economic climate index: 90.75 pts., +4.80 pts.
In July 2010 the Consumer Confidence Index (the CCI) increased by 2.4 points, in comparison with June, to 96.7 points, which is almost exactly the value recorded in May 2010, according to research carried out by Ipsos. The fact that the index is below 100 points means that there are still more pessimists than optimists among Polish consumers. All components of the CCI increased in July after declines reported a month earlier.
The economic climate index rose by 4.8 points, which was the most substantial increase among all CCI components. Ipsos emphasises that the assessments of economic development over the past year have improved. The respondents are more optimistic with regard to the future economic situation of Poland. Predictions regarding the unemployment rate have also improved: in July 30% expected the rate to increase in the near future, whereas 12% foresee a reduction.
The propensity-to-buy index increased by almost 0.9 points and stands at 100.7, which means that there is equilibrium between the optimists and pessimists. Ipsos insists that – taking into account the improving assessments of their financial situations – the respondents are relatively cautious with regard to the purchase of durable goods.
The consumer confidence index (the CCI) can range from 0 to 200 points. The calculation of this index is based on the answers given to five questions asked in an Ipsos survey. The survey was carried out between 8 and 14 July on a random representative quantitative sample of 1,000 Poles of 15 or more years of age.
