E-commerce market increasing significantly in Poland
2010-09-04
E-commerce is the fastest growing segment of the retail market in Poland, according to Gemius research agency. By the end of 2009, there were 7,600 e-stores operating in Poland and their number is expected to grow by 28% to around 10,000 by the end of 2010.
About half of the Internet users, which have not yet shopped online, intend to do so in the near future, as a Gemius survey shows.
In Q2 2010, Empik.com, an online multimedia outlet and bookstore, reported a 24% increase in net orders to the value to PLN 14m (€3.5m). In turn, the management of Neo24.pl underlines that the sales in the latter store grow faster than the market. Also, Allegro.pl, an auction portal, posted a 27% increase in sales revenues to PLN 1.9bn (€475m) in Q1 2010.
In turn, Swistak.pl, another auction portal, reported a 120% year-on-year rise in the number of auctions to 700,000 in H1 2010.
Despite rapid development of the e-market, Poland is still far from the saturation point. Online sales account for 2% of the Polish retail market, while in France, Germany or Great Britain e-commerce has a market share of 7-8%.
