Kaufland to launch shopping centres in cooperation with Empik
2010-09-09
Kaufland, the prominent German retail chain, and Empik, a multimedia and bookstore chain, intend to launch a joint commercial project in Warsaw. The shopping centre, to be built in the Praga Polnoc district, will be occupied by an Empik store which will be located adjacent to the Kaufland hypermarket. The establishment is due to open in September 2010. This will be the first such shopping centre in Poland, although the companies may consider more in the future.
At the end of 2009, Kaufland had 130 supermarkets and hypermarkets in Poland. The company had previously set up its stores in smaller towns but recently changed its strategy, focusing on large cities. In 2010, the operator opened a Kaufland store in the Tarchomin district of Warsaw, and another is scheduled for the Targowek district, also in Warsaw.
